| Close your eyes and picture the job. The offer call, the desk, the first Monday. It feels good. That is the problem. In 2002 two researchers ran four studies on people who wanted four different things, and the pattern held every time. The ones who pictured it most vividly did worst. Fewer applications, fewer offers, less money. Not because wanting is bad. Because your body cannot tell the difference between a good daydream and a small win. This is the most useful thing manifestation has ever been handed by a laboratory, and almost nobody passes it on. What the study measured The paper is by Gabriele Oettingen and Doris Mayer, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2002. They followed four groups. 1. Graduates looking for a job. 2. Students with a crush on somebody they knew. 3. Undergraduates about to sit exams. 4. Patients recovering from a hip replacement. Before the outcome, each person was measured on two separate things that sound identical and are not. Then the researchers waited, and came back to see what had happened to them. Expectation and fantasy are not the same Expectation is your honest read on how likely this is, given who you are and what you have done. Fantasy is the film that plays in your head when you imagine it going well. You can have a high expectation and a dull fantasy. You can have a glorious fantasy and no real belief at all. Most manifestation advice only ever works on the second one, because the second one is the enjoyable part. High expectations predicted more effort and better results. Positive fantasies predicted the reverse. The people who pictured the job most beautifully applied for fewer of them, got fewer offers, and earned less. The students with the crush were less likely to have started anything two years later. The hip patients moved less well, by their own report and by their surgeon's. Why the good picture costs you The explanation is simple and slightly insulting. Imagining the outcome gives you a small dose of the feeling you would get from having it. Your body relaxes. The urgency drains out. You have, in a small way, already arrived. Effort comes from the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Close the gap in your head and there is nothing left to push against. So the daydream is not a fuel. It is a payment taken in advance. You can feel this happening if you watch for it. You picture the offer call, you feel the warmth, and then you do not open the application. The afternoon goes somewhere else and you are not sure where. What to do with it instead The same researcher built the repair, and it is not positive thinking and not pessimism either. It is called mental contrasting, and the version you can remember has four steps. You can do the whole thing on the back of an envelope. 1. **Name the wish.** One thing, this month. 2. **Name the outcome.** The single best thing about getting it. Sit with that for a moment. 3. **Name the obstacle.** Not the economy. The thing inside you that stops you, and be honest about it. 4. **Make the plan.** If the obstacle shows up, then I will do this specific thing. That last line is doing most of the work. A plan written as if this, then that gets carried out far more often than a plan written as a hope. The shape matters because it hands the decision to a trigger instead of to your mood on the day. Four steps, ten minutes, once a month. It is less pleasant than the vision board and it is the part that moves. Where it goes wrong **You stop at the picture.** Most vision boards are step two on its own, repeated for a year. Step two feels the best and does the least. Nobody is telling you to take the board down. Put the obstacle on it, somewhere you will see it. **You name an obstacle that is not yours.** The market is hard. Nobody is hiring. That may well be true, and you cannot write a plan against it. The obstacle has to be something you do, like not sending the follow-up. **You treat this as proof that hoping is useless.** It is not. High expectations helped. What failed was mistaking a pleasant film for a real assessment of your chances. What we are seeing **Four studies, one result.** Graduates, students with a crush, exam takers and hip replacement patients were all tracked to the outcome. Positive expectations predicted high effort and success. Positive fantasies predicted the opposite, in every group. Source: Oettingen and Mayer, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2002. **Some of the follow-ups ran for two years.** This was not a one afternoon lab trick. Graduates were tracked well past the point where a good mood would have worn off. Source: Oettingen and Mayer, 2002. **The repair has a name.** Mental contrasting pairs the wish with the obstacle instead of the picture alone. Paired with an if this, then that plan, it is taught as the four step method. Source: Gabriele Oettingen, New York University. What the universe is doing this week The equinox passed after midnight on Tuesday in Europe, and the dark now has the longer half until March. The moon is waxing towards full, which is the building part of the month, and the part that suits a plan. The Harvest Moon lands on Saturday the 26th, in the evening across Europe. Three days is enough to name one obstacle and write one plan against it. None of this decides anything for you. It gives you a date to have it finished by. Your next step Take the career thing you have been picturing. Write the obstacle in one sentence, then write one line underneath in the form: if that happens, I will do this. Put it where you will see it on Monday. Remember, abundance is your birthright. |
